In times of e-commerce and same day delivery quick and smooth movement of goods is getting more and more important. A critical part in this context plays stock picking. Used amongst others are automatic logistics systems with conveyors, lifting devices as well as forklifts and automated guided vehicles (AGV). As a single source supplier for all areas of intralogistics ABM develops and produces – in close, cooperative collaboration with customers – custom systems solutions for optimum integration for specific applications. ABM Greiffenberger offers the right drive technology from a single source for a wide range of applications in container and pallet conveying technology. Thus roller conveyors for small loads up to 180 kg can be equipped with direct drive, compact, sensorless controlled SINOCHRON® motors (synchronous motors). These motors are maintenance-free and highly efficient, ensuring maximum availability.

If larger loads such as pallets must be moved, the energy-efficient permanent magnet motor can be combined with all versions of ABM gearboxes. Controllers perfectly matched to the motors, able to communicate via all common industrial BUS systems, complete the product range. Plug-in connections also allow plug-and-play use of the drives.

Systems Integration for the Mobile Drive Technology

For material handling applications ABM offers solutions for traction, lifting and steering. Optimized for specific requirements on installation space and performance several different gearbox and motor technologies are available. A high systems integration of sensors, brakes and controllers offers the user comfortable integrated solutions from a single source.

For mobile applications such as industrial trucks we present the platform products TDB230/254 and TDH230i with integrated electrical steer option. Designed for wheel diameters of 230 and 254 mm they are ideal for us in truck fleets. With the new highly integrated steer unit we offer users a system solution consisting of gearbox, motor and CAN-Bus guided controller. Optionally even redundant steer monitoring directly on the drive wheel is possible.

Modular Product Building Blocks for Automated Guided Vehicles

In addition to industry sector specific drive solution for industrial trucks, ABM also offers a wide range of different gearbox and motor technologies. These modular building blocks offer optimum, complete drive solutions for a large variety of transportation vehicles by providing individual configuration options for each application.

The particular designs of straight, hollow and right-angle shaft gearboxes can be combined with asynchronous and Synochron motors. The resulting drive units excel with a compact envelope ideal for automated guided vehicles. Depending on the application requirements the systems can be completed from a comprehensive list of options such as electro-magnetic holding brakes and speed and temperature sensors.

Choosing a Gearbox Drive and Electric Motor Supplier

When choosing manufacturing partners during a machine build, remember that there are two methods for choosing a gearbox and electric motor supplier.
One is selecting a pre-engineered unit and the other is choosing a gearbox-motor combination and integrating them into the equipment.

Pre-engineered gearmotor solutions are suitable if a design engineer doesn’t have the time or engineering resources to build a gearmotor in-house — or if the
design needs a quick setup. New modular approaches to support OEMs (and enable new machine tools, automation, and design software) now let engineers get
reasonably priced gearmotors even in modest volumes.

It’s true that one benefit to selecting a separate motor and gearbox and then combining them can less expensive than choosing a pre-engineered gearmotor.
Another benefit to this approach is that one may be able to design the most optimized gearmotor for the application at hand … because this approach also gives the
design engineer the most control over the final configuration and cost.

No matter the approach to gearmotor selection, be sure to continually improve the design by comparing predictions of performance with measurements. Then use
the result of the analysis to improve next gearmotor iteration.
